Onge's Erasure Page Website To Close Later This Year

5 June 2019

With a heavy heart, I announce that I will be shutting down this website in the coming months.

Wait, what?! Say it ain't so!

I'm afraid it is so! Back in 1998 when I first launched this website as a spotty-faced teenager, I was excited to be sharing my love for my favourite band. Over the past two decades, this site site has been a labour of love and if I was to add up all the hours I've spent working on this site, it wouldn't total mere days, it would be months! For many a year, spending countless hours trying to make the best Erasure site on the internet was a hobby I very much enjoyed, but things have changed since becoming a father. As anyone with young children will know, once you become a parent your priorities change and your free time drops significantly!

Without enough time to devote to the site, standards have been slipping for a number of years. For a while now, I've felt that my site needs to be redesigned and streamlined as I've done a few times throughout the years. Problem is, the last rebuild took me 9 months and that was before I had children - when I actually had free time! This site has over 1000 pages and I know I'm not going to have enough time to do the job I'd like to do.

But even if I somehow managed to find all this time, in recent years maintaining this site has stopped being a pleasure and has become a chore. Updating content was never really what I enjoyed (I like to build stuff!) and when a hobby becomes a chore, it's not really a hobby worth pursuing any longer.

So does this mean you're no longer a fan of the band?

What? No, of course not! I'm still the passionate fan I've always been! I'll still be buying all the releases and re-issues, I'll still be attending concerts and I'll still be spreading the word online... I just won't run this website any longer.

Can't you just keep your site running and not update it any more?

Sadly, it's not that simple. Even a site that doesn't get updated needs things like server and software maintenance and I'd rather not have to worry about such things. When I put my name to something (even if it's just my nickname!) I want it to the best it can be and I won't be satisfied keeping an old site running. I do plan to archive my site in some way so the site will persist on in some form, however (I can't just say goodbye after all these years!).

Will you be shutting your social media pages?

Nope! Onge's Erasure Page will live on via Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, SoundCloud and Spotify. I'm not disappearing from the face of the earth - I still plan to post on these channels and to engage with other fans and I already have some ideas for quizzes and polls I'll be running on Facebook and Twitter. And when all is said and done, it's the messages from other fans that was always the best part of having an Erasure site, from all the emails, guestbook signings (remember when websites had guestbooks?!), tweets, etc, so I'll very much still be part of the online Erasure community.

This is the worst news ever!

Now, now - you're in shock. In time, you'll get over this - just be strong! But in all seriousness, traffic to my site is half what it used to be 10 years ago. It's clear that browsing habits have moved onto social channels more and that whilst fan sites were all the rage in the late 90s, there's less need for them in 2019. And to be fair, after 20 years I feel like I've earnt my "retirement"!

Where will I go now for my Erasure fix?

Other than following me on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, SoundCloud and Spotify you mean? Well, I'm glad you ask! There are some great Erasure resources out there:

- The band's official website, Facebook and Twitter pages
- Unofficial Erasure Club on Facebook is a friendly place to chat all things Erasure, as is the erasure4rum
- Vince Clarke Fansite has some really great content you won't find anywhere else online
- If you used my site to look up Erasure's discography, check out
- If you looked up lyrics on my site, simply use Google and you'll find what you need!

So when is this site closing, exactly?

Exactly? I don't know. But probably around September time, once I manage to sort out a lot of admin. Keep an eye on my Facebook and Twitter pages for more details.

Anything we can say to make you change your mind?

I'm afraid not. This is a decision that I didn't take lightly, but in all honesty I made my mind up a few years ago that I wanted to close the site... I just wanted to reach the 20 year milestone first!

I'd like to thank everyone who has supported and enjoyed this site over the years. I was going to try and name some names, but honestly there are too many to mention and I don't want to forget anyone! I really appreciate how everyone in the Erasure community has been so great to me over the years. Thank you, all!

  2. A little piece of my life has died…

As a father of 2, I totally understand why but let me have my denial stage and then acceptance stage in about 2 years…

    Good luck with fatherhood.

  4. Hi onge,

First of all, thank you so much for this website and all work and hours, days and months to keep on line and refreshed. The space was always a place to read good histories and reviews, to see rare images and videos, to answer the polls, to know more about our fave band. I remember when Richard had problems to change the official website to mention your site and name for help to solve them. But, as you said, websites had lows interests through last years.
I completely comprehend and understood your reasons to close it. And they are life reasons, a stage of your life in family so important to give atention and time for them.
You deserve all greetings for your job through all this 20 years! All fans recognised in you one of the most dedicated fan and friend.

  6. This is sad news for sure. It’s not nice when things change and life ‘gets in the way’ of our Wonderland, children come along and yes life changes we all understand your reasoning.
Traffic numbers have dropped, that’s life,we may not accept it but Erasure is a BIG BIG thing for us hardcore fans, but in the real world you say Erasure the response is ‘who?’,or our favourite ‘oh yes the 80’s band’.
Sites like this and good old fashioned forums like my yes new members welcome (shameless plug) are sadly becoming more & more less common, since I rebooted the E4M the numbers have plummeted as it’s no longer fashionable to use these sites,it’s FaceBook and the instant ‘hit’ of info that people seem to want.

This site has always been up there with the best,I could even stretch to saying it IS still the best unofficial Erasure website, but we can still rely on a web presence with your other outlets such as FaceBook & Twitter etc.

Thanks for all your hard work Onge, all the best with the next wave of Onge-offspring.
(And thanks for the name check it’s always nice to see what we do is still appreciated)

  8. Thank you for everything you did for all of us…I used your infos so many times and your infos helped me to understand and it was a BIG help in getting my collection together…after I was forced to leave my first collection in my country of origin…and that collection was also put together thanks to your web…I was little lost soul in UK without any lust for anything…than one day I wondered into one second hand shop with vinyls…and found around 50 pieces of 12″ all Erasure…I bought them from a sentiment and for a superb price of 30 pounds…and than I went to your web and start putting everything together…after just few years 4 or 5 I managed to collect the BASICS plus most of limited stuff…so now I am PROUD owner of second collection of OUR BELOVED!!!…and your web was a big help in this….so thank you from bottom from my little E-heart.I wish you all the best in you parenting life and maybe we will bump into each other one day in a gig…;-) XDavidX

  9. I surely wouldn’t be exaggerating to say this site is one of the best ones to know about Erasure, but your decision to close it is a natural consequence of the drastic changes in people’s behavior on internet, which has become more a source of virtual interaction than a source of information, like it used to be in the late 90s and early 00s… You are a great englishman and I will always hold you in high regard.
