With a heavy heart, I announce that I will be shutting down this website in the coming months.
Wait, what?! Say it ain't so!
I'm afraid it is so! Back in 1998 when I first launched this website as a spotty-faced teenager, I was excited to be sharing my love for my favourite band. Over the past two decades, this site site has been a labour of love and if I was to add up all the hours I've spent working on this site, it wouldn't total mere days, it would be months! For many a year, spending countless hours trying to make the best Erasure site on the internet was a hobby I very much enjoyed, but things have changed since becoming a father. As anyone with young children will know, once you become a parent your priorities change and your free time drops significantly!
Without enough time to devote to the site, standards have been slipping for a number of years. For a while now, I've felt that my site needs to be redesigned and streamlined as I've done a few times throughout the years. Problem is, the last rebuild took me 9 months and that was before I had children - when I actually had free time! This site has over 1000 pages and I know I'm not going to have enough time to do the job I'd like to do.
But even if I somehow managed to find all this time, in recent years maintaining this site has stopped being a pleasure and has become a chore. Updating content was never really what I enjoyed (I like to build stuff!) and when a hobby becomes a chore, it's not really a hobby worth pursuing any longer.
So does this mean you're no longer a fan of the band?
What? No, of course not! I'm still the passionate fan I've always been! I'll still be buying all the releases and re-issues, I'll still be attending concerts and I'll still be spreading the word online... I just won't run this website any longer.
Can't you just keep your site running and not update it any more?
Sadly, it's not that simple. Even a site that doesn't get updated needs things like server and software maintenance and I'd rather not have to worry about such things. When I put my name to something (even if it's just my nickname!) I want it to the best it can be and I won't be satisfied keeping an old site running. I do plan to archive my site in some way so the site will persist on in some form, however (I can't just say goodbye after all these years!).
Will you be shutting your social media pages?
Nope! Onge's Erasure Page will live on via Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, SoundCloud and Spotify. I'm not disappearing from the face of the earth - I still plan to post on these channels and to engage with other fans and I already have some ideas for quizzes and polls I'll be running on Facebook and Twitter. And when all is said and done, it's the messages from other fans that was always the best part of having an Erasure site, from all the emails, guestbook signings (remember when websites had guestbooks?!), tweets, etc, so I'll very much still be part of the online Erasure community.
This is the worst news ever!
Now, now - you're in shock. In time, you'll get over this - just be strong! But in all seriousness, traffic to my site is half what it used to be 10 years ago. It's clear that browsing habits have moved onto social channels more and that whilst fan sites were all the rage in the late 90s, there's less need for them in 2019. And to be fair, after 20 years I feel like I've earnt my "retirement"!
Where will I go now for my Erasure fix?
- The band's official website, Facebook and Twitter pages
- Unofficial Erasure Club on Facebook is a friendly place to chat all things Erasure, as is the erasure4rum
- Vince Clarke Fansite has some really great content you won't find anywhere else online
- If you used my site to look up Erasure's discography, check out discos.com
- If you looked up lyrics on my site, simply use Google and you'll find what you need!
So when is this site closing, exactly?
Exactly? I don't know. But probably around September time, once I manage to sort out a lot of admin. Keep an eye on my Facebook and Twitter pages for more details.
Anything we can say to make you change your mind?
I'm afraid not. This is a decision that I didn't take lightly, but in all honesty I made my mind up a few years ago that I wanted to close the site... I just wanted to reach the 20 year milestone first!
I'd like to thank everyone who has supported and enjoyed this site over the years. I was going to try and name some names, but honestly there are too many to mention and I don't want to forget anyone! I really appreciate how everyone in the Erasure community has been so great to me over the years. Thank you, all!
